Restylane
As we age, our faces lose shape and definition, and lines, wrinkles and skin folds take over. Made in Sweden, often called the “land of natural beauties,” Restylane treatments can restore the fullness, contour and smoothness that have been lost with time. This safe natural substance is a cosmetic dermal filler that is made from the body’s own material, hylauronic acid, and provides instantaneous and long-lasting natural enhancement. Restylane creates a natural beauty lift without surgery.
What happens as we age?
Our skin is the largest organ of our body and is comprised of three layers – outer, middle and subcutaneous (deep inner) layer. Along with collagen, hyaluronic acid plays a very important role in keeping skin healthy. Hyaluronic acid helps to bind water, which is necessary for keeping skin full and preventing dryness and wrinkling. As we age and lose collagen and hyaluronic acid, our skin loses the ability to hold moisture, so skin folds and lines and wrinkles form readily. This, along with smoking, alcohol consumption, sunbathing and poor nutritional habits, contribute to “loss of beauty” during the aging process. The dermis, or middle layer of the skin, functions as the skin’s support structure and contains the collagen, elastin and other biological substances, including hyaluronic acid. As we age, the production of these substances decreases and the elastin fibers become looser and gather in formations, visible as wrinkles, fine lines and folds. Restylane provides volume and restores fullness – a natural solution to a natural problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is Restylane made?
Restylane is a dermal filler made from non-animal based hyaluronic acid. It is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA™, Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid, which is biodegradable, completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid and totally stable. Even though it is biosynthetically produced, it is identical to the natural substance produced by our bodies.
How safe is Restylane?
Cosmetic surgeons worldwide have been using Restylane since 1996. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction because this is a non-animal based, fully biocompatible product. No allergy testing is required. Results are seen immediately. Restylane is FDA approved.
Were any scientific studies done on Restylane?
Yes. A double-blind study (randomized) enrolled 138 subjects who each received split-face treatment with Restylane in one nasolabial fold and Zyplast (collagen) in the other fold. After six months, more than twice as many Restylane-treated patients continued to experience excellent results, versus the patients with collagen-treated folds.
How does Restylane work and how is the treatment done?
In tiny amounts, Restylane is injected into the skin with an ultra fine needle. Dr.Covey may massage your skin gently to optimize contouring of the gel. This treatment works in two ways: once injected into the mid to deep dermis, the NASHA gel adds volume and fullness, smoothing out facial wrinkles and folds. Then, the gel integrates into dermal tissue, attracting and binding to water molecules and helping to maintain volume. The results are instantaneous.
How long does Restylane last and will I need more treatments?
The average treatment results will last six months or longer, which is twice as long as those of collagen. Typically, patients are treated once or twice a year. We know that having a touch-up treatment before the product fully dissipates from your last treatment will enhance Restylane’s lasting effects.
Botox and Restylane - what’s the difference?
Restylane is a natural, cosmetic dermal filler. Botox is a natural purified protein that is used to block nerve transmission and relax muscles that usually contract, causing wrinkles and folds. Depending upon goals, personal needs and concerns, patients choose the treatment that will best meet their needs. Botox and Restylane often complement each other as a nonsurgical treatment for wrinkles and folds.
Bovine collagen and Restylane – how are they different?
Bovine collagen is animal-based (from cows) and may cause allergic reactions in humans. Pre-testing is required before treatment with bovine collagen. Restylane is non-animal based – no allergy testing is required, no waiting is required – so there is no risk of animal based disease. The results from Restylane treatment have been proven to last twice as long as collagen treatments.
How much does Restylane cost?
Over the long-term, the cost is much less than similar procedures because the results are more enduring. However, the cost is comparable to similar procedures. Dr. Covey customizes each patient’s treatment based upon individual concerns and goals, so the cost varies from patient to patient.
