Rejuvenating Your Gaze: Non-Surgical Treatments for Aging Eyes

As we age, the delicate skin around our eyes is often the first to show signs of aging. From wrinkles and fine lines to puffiness and dark circles, aging eyes can detract from our overall appearance and make us look tired or older than we feel. Fortunately, there are a variety of options to rejuvenate the eye area without the need for invasive surgery.

Botox for Crow’s Feet: One of the most popular non-surgical treatments for aging eyes is Botox. This neuromodulator works by relaxing the muscles around the eyes, reducing the appearance of crow’s feet and dynamic wrinkles. With just a few quick injections, Botox can smooth out fine lines and restore a more youthful, refreshed look to the eye area.

Dermal Fillers for Tear Troughs: Hollowing or dark circles under the eyes, known as tear troughs, can contribute to a tired or aged appearance. Injectable dermal fillers, such as Restylane Eyelight and Belotero, can help plump up this area, smoothing out hollows and reducing the appearance of dark circles. By restoring lost volume, dermal fillers can rejuvenate the under-eye area and create a more rested, youthful appearance.

Laser Skin Resurfacing: Laser treatments such as Fraxel Repair or Fraxel Dual, can address a variety of concerns around the eyes, including wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin texture. Fractional laser resurfacing stimulates collagen production and promotes skin renewal, resulting in smoother, tighter skin with improved tone and texture. Laser treatments can also help reduce the appearance of sun damage and age spots, giving the eyes a brighter, more radiant look.

Thermage for Skin Tightening: Thermage utilizes radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten loose skin around the eyes. This non-invasive treatment targets sagging skin, smoothing out wrinkles and improving overall skin texture without surgery or downtime.

Exilis Ultra 360 for Eye Rejuvenation: Exilis Ultra 360 combines radiofrequency and ultrasound energies to target both superficial and deep layers of the skin around the eyes. By promoting collagen remodeling and tightening loose skin, Exilis Ultra 360 can reduce wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and enhance the overall appearance of the eye area.

Whether you’re targeting wrinkles, dark circles, or sagging skin, there are effective options available to address your specific concerns without surgery. Call our office today and I’ll design a treatment plan just for you.

Eyes: Windows To Your…Age

No one really wants to reveal his or her age. But there are places on our bodies that can give secrets away, namely, the eyes.

The skin surrounding your eyes is extremely delicate, making it susceptible to cosmetic problems that make you look older than you are. Also, because it moves so much during facial expression, lines and wrinkles form over time. Crow’s feet emerge on the outside of the eye and creases appear underneath the lash line, for instance. Add dark circles, hollowing, drooping lids and puffiness, and you will appear tired and worn. Perhaps you’ve tried creams that claim to tighten skin or cold tea bags and cucumbers that temporarily reduce fluid retention, but you are still not happy when you look into the mirror.

We offer a range of nonsurgical treatments that will help return a well-rested look to your eyes and ultimately, your face. Depending on your individual needs, we can craft a personal plan that will help you look refreshed and more youthful, with minimal downtime and recuperation.

Here are a few of our most popular eye treatments:

Recharge Those Eyes

When you really want to know how someone feels, you look into his eyes. They can often hold the answers to many mysteries. Unfortunately, they can be a lot more obvious about your age.

The skin surrounding your eyes, because it is so delicate, is at risk for a multitude of cosmetic problems that make you look older than you are. And, because this area is involved in facial expression, the natural movement of the skin causes lines and wrinkles to form over time. Crow’s feet, additional lines and wrinkles underneath the lower lashes, dark circles, hollowing, drooping lids and puffiness all contribute to a tired appearance. Perhaps you’ve tried creams that claim to tighten skin or cold tea bags and cucumbers that temporarily reduce fluid retention, but the concerns remain.

We offer a range of nonsurgical treatments that will help return a well-rested look to your eyes and therefore, your face. Depending on your individual needs, we can craft a personal plan that will help you look refreshed and more youthful, with minimal downtime and recuperation.

Give Yourself a Pre-Holiday Lift

We know that you want to look your best this time of year, with holiday festivities just getting under way. The good news….there is still time for a few quick in-and-out treatments that will make all the difference in your appearance. Instantly, you’ll look fresh and rested, and you’ll feel invigorated, too…just the right recipe for the holiday season.

Here are a few suggestions for the upcoming weeks…

Try a nonsurgical mini facelift that will tighten skin and boost collagen production. With Thermage CPT, we can treat the skin on the eyelids, under-eye areas, abdomen, arms, legs and even your sagging buttocks. It’s the most effective lift treatment for a multitude of concerns, and the results are dramatic. Or, you can try an Exilis laser treatment, which tightens, firms and tones loose and sagging skin and reshapes and melts stubborn fatty deposits anywhere on your face and body. Popular areas treated with Exilis include the face, jowls, neck, chest, back, “love handles,” “bra fat,” abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks and knees.

Restore facial volume with dermal fillers such as Voluma, Radiesse and Restylane Lyft. These will minimize hollowness or lines that have formed with age.

Plump your lips with hyaluronic acid fillers, including Juvederm and Restylane.

Smooth out forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet with Botox or Dysport.

Fill in smile lines, marionette lines or nasolabial folds (lines that stretch from the outer edge of the nostrils to the outer tip of the lips) with Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse.

All of these quick treatments are nonsurgical, requiring no anesthesia or downtime. You can be back in full swing immediately, looking younger and feeling that way, too.

Call our offices this week to schedule a pre-holiday appointment.

Look Aging in the Eyes: Skim Years with a Botox Brow Lift

We look at your face from the inside out. Knowing how to make subtle changes in your outward appearance requires that we understand exactly how your muscles work beneath the surface of your skin. And, the muscles of your face are some of the most complex.

Some facial muscles work against each other—certain ones lift a given feature while other ones push it downward. The outer part of the eyebrow, for instance, is lifted up by forehead muscles and pulled down by squinting muscles. This push-pull, though, presents a clever option. If we want only the muscle that does the lifting to do its job, we can use Botox to relax the muscle that does the pulling. The result is a nonsurgical brow lift, a treatment of a few simple injections that raises and shapes the brow area and also corrects forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines.

Often, the lift measures only about 2 millimeters, but the difference is striking. You will look rejuvenated and refreshed immediately, without undergoing traditional brow or forehead surgery.

Eye, Eye, Sir

Sometimes, the same conditions look different on men than they do on women. Some are more pronounced. Some are less so. A man’s eye area is subject to all sorts of stress and can have a huge impact on his overall expression. If you are noticing any of the common concerns described below, keep calm (and please don’t wrinkle your forehead). We can perform simple treatments that will help return a look of youth and vigor–with short office visits and limited or no recovery time.

Droopy Brows and Eyelids: Excessive movement of the muscles surrounding the brow and particularly, issues involving the levator muscle (this elevates the upper lid), can cause your eyebrow to lose its natural arch. Botox, Dysport or Thermage/Thermal Lift can raise the brows to a more youthful position.

Crow’s Feet: These fine lines, which begin at the outer corner of the eyes and fan out, sometimes to the hairline, tend to make eyes appear squinty and aged. They are inevitable, since they are caused by the natural movement of the face, but they don’t have to be permanent. Botox or Dysport injections are the speedy solution for smoothing out lines and wrinkles.

Under-eye Bulging: When fat redistributes from the eye socket to the area underneath the lower eyelid, you will see sacks and bulging. This is a common sign of aging. To reduce the puffiness, we can use Thermage/Thermal Lift and help refresh and revive your appearance.

Sunken Tear Troughs: As you age, you may experience hollowing of the tear troughs on either side of your nose, just below the bridge and lower eyelid. Sometimes, these sunken spaces can extend as far down as the cheek. With hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero, we can fill the troughs and restore the vitality of the eye area.

Dark Circles: When puffiness occurs right under the lower eyelid and is combined with the hollowing of the tear trough, shadows form. These are what we see as dark circles. Even if you don’t feel tired, you will look as if you are. Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane or Belotero can help diminish the darkness, leaving you looking more rested and energetic.

Whatever you see in the mirror, we can certainly help you feel better about it. Whether with hyaluronic acid fillers that plump and add firmness or injectables that smooth fine lines and wrinkles, we can devise a quick and easy plan for you this summer.

Keeping Your Eyes Young and Beautiful

When you meet someone for the first time, you likely notice his eyes before any other facial feature. They create expression, they show emotion, and they can captivate.

Their constant movement, though, can easily damage the skin around the eyes, which is our body’s most delicate. Not only does normal smiling, laughing, frowning and squinting tax the skin; we add to the stress by manipulating it throughout the day. We rub the skin when we are sleepy or itchy, tug it to remove makeup and pull it to insert and take out contact lenses. Add the natural slowing of collagen production that comes with aging, and it is inevitable that fine lines, deep wrinkles and sagging will occur.

If I had to choose a feature whose maintenance was critical for looking young and rested, I would definitely select the eyes. There are several measures that you can take to keep your eyes looking beautiful, as well as simple procedures that we can perform in the office.

What You Can Do:

  • Hydrate–Water keeps skin elastic, so drink as many glasses as you can each day. Alcohol has the reverse effect, so limit your intake for the prettiest skin.
  • Protect Yourself from the Sun–Ultraviolet rays cause 90 percent of our skin’s aging. So, wear a hat and sunglasses (so that you squint less), stay out of the sun and go overboard with sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), even when you are in the shade.
  • Avoid Smoking–Not only is cigarette smoking a cancer risk, nicotine will damage your body’s ability to produce collagen and constrict the blood vessels under the eyes and in the face.

What We Can Do:

To enhance the youthful appearance of your eye area, we can do a few cosmetic quick fixes.

  •  With Botox or Dysport, we can relax the muscles that cause crow’s feet and other wrinkles around the eyes.
  • With Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero, we can fill in the sunken troughs that hollow the eyes and create dark circles.
  • With Thermage CPT or Exilis Elite, we can lift the hooded eyelid or brow.
  • With Fraxel Repair, we can tighten the skin under the eyes and lift drooping eyelids.

Call our office today to schedule a personalized consultation for all of your anti-aging needs.

Refresh Your Under Eyes with Fillers

When you look at yourself in the mirror do you see dark circles, deep hollows, and tired looking eyes? If the hustle and bustle of the holidays put extra stress on you and it’s showing, you can turn to one of the most underestimated areas of the face to restore some youthfulness to your features: the tear troughs.

What are tear troughs?

The tear trough is the area under the eye that extends from the inner corner of the eye, arching down in a semicircle. The technical term is the nasojugal groove. When the tear troughs are sunken, they can cast shadows under the eyes that looks like dark circles. This gives the face a worn out appearance. The sunkenness also ages the face by creating a visible separation from what should be the smooth transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek.

Why do tear troughs happen?

The skin under the eyes is very thin and delicate. It shows signs of distress more easily than thicker skin. It is also more prone to the aging effects of gravity. The tissue laxity and volume loss under the eyes as we age leads to the tear trough becoming more prominent. Also, as fat gets displaced from behind the eye, or possibly increases and bulges under the eye, this can accentuate the aging of the eye area.

How can the under eye be rejuvenated?

Try

  • getting more rest
  • cutting down on salty foods
  • minimizing your exposure environmental pollutants
  • not rubbing your eyes so much

While these tips can prevent the tear troughs and under eye bags from getting worse, you can also reverse their appearance with hyaluronic acid fillers.

Rejuvenate Your Tear Troughs with HA Fillers

While there are surgical options to reversing tear troughs, more people prefer to try non invasive treatments first. This has led to the use of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Restylane, Juvéderm or Belotero. When they are injected on top of the orbital bone, the HA attracts water to the area to restore volume. This gives the eyes a fresh, rested appearance by the next day after treatment. These results usually last 6 months to a year, and you can go right back to your daily routine with no downtime or recovery.

Side Effects?

There may be minor bruising or swelling, which is common with most injections. This can easily be lessened with an ice pack, and covered by makeup

Subtle Solutions for Significant Youthfulness

Filling the tear trough area is becoming more and more popular. More patients are realizing that facial rejuvenation can happen from restoring volume loss in subtle areas such as the earlobes, temples, chin, melolabial folds and tear troughs. One can definitely see a more rested, fresh, and youthful appearance for the whole face by applying HA fillers to rejuvenate the area under the eyes.

Are you ready to look more refreshed and younger by getting your tear troughs filled? Visit www.DrCovey.com to schedule an appointment to see which filler is the best for you.

Tips to Keep Eyes Looking Young

If I could only treat one area of the face, for most people it would be the eye area. This is because the eyes are the focal point of the face and this area is also the first to show signs of aging. The skin around the eyes is actually 10 times thinner than the rest of the face. It is constantly in motion with daily smiling, laughing, frowning, squinting, and even simply blinking!

The delicate skin around the eyes also gets a daily stretching between being rubbed when sleepy or itchy, tugged to remove makeup, and pulled when inserting contact lenses. All this movement, along with the natural slowing of collagen production with age, causes the sagging, fine lines, and deep wrinkles.

I’m definitely a fan of laughing and enjoying life, so I’m not going to tell you to stop being expressive with your eyes (although it does take more muscles to frown than smile so frowning less is good for more than one reason). But besides caring more delicately for your eye area, there are some more ways to maintain and regain the ‘bright eyes’ of your youth.

Hydrate

We all know that what we put in our body can help or harm its ability to rejuvenate itself. Water plays a crucial role in maintaining the elasticity of skin, so drink up. But don’t drink alcohol often since it is very dehydrating.

Sunshine with Protection

The sun is great for elevating our mood and Vitamin D, but UV rays cause 90% of skin’s aging. I suggest always wearing a hat and sunscreen. Also, wearing sunglasses will prevent UV damage and will keep you from creating deeper crow’s feet from squinting.

Kick the Habit

If not for the proven health reasons, consider that smoking cigarettes containing nicotine will damage your body’s ability to produce collagen. Nicotine causes the blood vessels under the eyes and in the face to be constricted and unable to absorb nutrients. They’ll be unable to make collagen, which keeps skin firm, full, and young looking.

Skincare

Everyday maintenance of your skin with a clinically proven skin care system or serum will help maintain any cosmetic treatments and other efforts to restore youthfulness. We offer some great options including our own personalized line of skin care products.

Restorative treatments

Preventative actions to slow the signs of aging eyes are crucial, but if you’re 30 years old or older you, more than likely already have some repairing to do. To enhance the youthful appearance of your eye area, I recommend a couple of cosmetic quick fixes that are ‘in and out’ procedures:

  1. “Relax” the muscles that are creating these crow’s feet and other wrinkles around the eyes with botulinum injections BOTOX or DYSPORT.
  2. Fill the sunken under eye troughs that hollow the eyes and cause the appearance of dark circles with hylauronic acid injections RESTYLANE, JUVEDERM, or BELOTERO.
  3. Lift the hooded eye lid or brow with THERMAGE CPT, the only ‘no down time’, non surgical face lift.

Follow these tips for going easy on your eyes and you’ll be happy with what you see!

Sincerely,

Dr. Covey

REJUVINATING EYE AREA Q&A

Are you considering cosmetic procedures to restore the youthful appearance around your eyes?  Here are some of the most common questions I get regarding the non surgical treatments that I offer to rejuvenate the eye area:

What ‘in and out’ procedures do you have for the eye area? I offer many outpatient treatment options that can be accomplished in less than an hour. BOTOX and DYSPORT are botulinum injections that cause the muscles to “relax”, which creates a smooth effect that is perfect for most cases of crow’s feet. THERMAGE/THERMAL LIFT is the very popular non surgical face lift that corrects droopy brows and eyelids. It also smoothes and softens fine lines, crow’s feet, and puffiness under the eyes. RESTYLANE, JUVEDERM, and BELOTERO aredermal fillersthat instantly restore fullness and smoothness to sunken or hollow tear troughs.

Is it possible to see good results without major surgery? Yes! I am very pleased to offer a large selection of effective treatments that do not require the scalpel. The injectables use a small amount of liquid in a very fine needle to smooth and fill fine lines. And I proudly offer the THERMAGE CPT procedure, which uses patented radio frequency technology to heat and cool the skin simultaneously to result in visible tightening and lifting of skin.

How quickly will I see results? Results are visible within a few days to a few weeks, depending on the treatment. For example, DYSPORT is great for smoothing out crow’s feetand takes effect in 1 to 2 days. BOTOX can restore eye’s youthful appearance by “relaxing” the muscles that cause crow’s feet within 3 to 10 days. THERMAGE/THERMAL LIFT stimulates collagen production for visible eye lifting results revealed within a few weeks. The fillers RESTYLANE, JUVEDERM, and BELOTERO provide instant age defying effects!

How long will results last? Hylauronic acid fillers that can plump up hollow tear troughs will last 6 months or longer. We’ve also noticed that having a “touch up” treatment before the hylauronic acid fully dissipates will help the results to last longer.  Eye rejuvination from botulinum injections will last a fewmonths, as well. THERMAGE CPT can tighten, smooth and lift for up to several years, depending upon the individual aging process.

How do I know which treatment is best for me? While some injectables accomplish the same task, such as BOTOX and DYSPORT, there are subtle differences that make one or the other a better choice for each individual. I am happy to help my patients to decide on the best treatment options for their unique needs. I offer the safest, most advanced options in non surgical rejuvenation technology to choose from.

ALL EYES ON MY EYES…FOR LADIES

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but our topic today is the beauty of the eyes of the beholden. Studies show that the eyes are the foremost feature that is noticed in most faces. The leading ladies of Hollywood and even your friends on social media are showing off their youthful, bright, sparkling eyes in close up photos, don’t you think it’s time to start your own ‘all eyes on my eyes’ campaign? Here’s the list of the top procedures that are quick fixes to the most common concerns with the eye area:

  • BOTOX is a botulinum injection that causes the muscles to “relax”, which creates a smooth effect that is perfect for most cases of crow’s feet. A very small amount of Botox toxin is precisely injected into the specific muscles with very minimal discomfort. FDA approved as safe for over 15 years, Botox’s youth restoring effects are visible within 3 to 10 days and last a few months.
  • DYSPORT is very similar to Botox since it is a FDA approved injectable form of botulinum toxin Type A.  It is great for smoothing out fine lines, such as crow’s feet. Dysport is simply a competitor to Botox that may be a better fit for some patients because it may last longer in some people and may be more affordable. It also works faster since it takes effect in 1 to 2 days.
  • THERMAGE/THERMAL LIFT is the non surgical face lift that is very popular to correct droopy brows and eyelids. This FDA approved procedure also smoothes and softens fine lines, crow’s feet, andpuffiness under the eyes. Results aren’t instant, but correct at the source, by empowering the body to create more collagen, which tightens and smoothes the skin for up to several years, depending upon the individual aging process.
  • RESTYLANE is adermal filler that instantly restores fullness and smoothness to sunken or hollow tear troughs. This long lasting, natural injectable restores that energetic, bright look to hollow or dark under eyes, using hylauronic acid, which is a safe, natural substance that our bodies produce less of as we age. It is non animal based, therefore requires no allergy testing and also lasts twice as long as bovine collagen injections.
  • JUVEDERM is the most advancedhylauronic acid’ injectable available today for filling creases and hollows, such as under eye sunkeness. Clinical testing shows that the treatment may involve less discomfort that other injectables.
  • BELOTERO also uses hyaluronic acid (HA) to fill fine lines, crow’s feet, and sunken under eyes to restore youthful appearance of the eye area. This FDA approved injectable provides instant results that are subtle and natural in appearance.

Visit www.DrCovey.com or call to let me help you find the best treatment to restore your eye’s youthful radiance.  Afterwards, you’ll be so happy, you won’t believe your eyes!

Hot Cosmetic Trends for Men in 2014

shutterstock_85362907Today’s Men are clearly in on having anti aging cosmetic procedures!  My male clientelle is growing by leaps and bounds the same as others across the nation. There are a few differences between men’s demands and those of our female patients.  Basically, Men want to look younger, more energetic and healthy simply because they want to…and because the competitive career market today demands that men and women look good.  Our society equates looking good with youthfulness, thus the tremendous upsurge in age defying cosmetic treatments this past decade.  Men also want their treatments to be “subtle”…they simple don’t want anyone else to know they’re having Botox® (Brotox) treatments for a smoother, younger looking face.  Men want “in and out” no downtime options.  That means treatments like Botox with reduced redness, swelling and bruising. (Be sure you use only a Certified Expert Injector).

We offer many Men’s anti aging cosmetic treatments that are safe and effective without surgery…that’s right no knife, no cutting and no downtime.

TOP COSMETIC TRENDS for MEN

  • American Board of Plastic Surgery reports Male cosmetic treatments are up by 258% over 10 years
  • Men are opting for more laser treatments to promote health and youthfulness
  • Rhinoplasty, Hair Removal and Blepharoplasty (for the eyes) is still at the top
  • Botox (Brotox), Hyaluronic Acid Fillers e.g. Juvederm, Restylane etc for lines and wrinkles and stressed look removal
  • Microdermabrasion for skin resurfacing reveals younger, healthier skin, removes scars, sun damage and discoloration
  • Men are starting cosmetic treatments at younger ages and then maintaining on a regular basis
  • The Millenials treat cosmetic anti aging procedures as part of their regular health regimen
  • Cosmetic treatments for men and women of the younger generations are the “New Beauty Economics”
  • The stigma for men and cosmetic treatments is gone…men are in the deal to stay
  • I offer non surgical alternatives to surgical procedures

Ok, we have the treatments and they work.  But preventive measures are important too.  Here are a few that can really make a difference in your quest for anti aging:

  1. Start now and do these the rest of your life to make a difference
  2. SKIN CARE is critical at every age.  To maintain healthy skin keep well hydrated, including your facial skin.  Yes, men need good skin hydration and protection against harmful environmental agents.
  3. Use Sunscreen – UVA and UVB rays are responsible for 90% of the early signs of facial aging
  4. Stress…manage it or it will manage you!  Daily stressors contribute to acne, facial lines and grooves especially around the eyes.
  5. Exercise for Stress Reduction.  Go to the gym and workout, ski, swim, bike etc to get the blood flowing and strengthen those heart muscles.
  6. Maintain a “healthy” diet.  Get rid of the junk food.  Instead, eat raw vegetables, fruits, good oils, drink at lest 64 ounces of water daily, eat more fish etc.
  7. Sleep is critical to good overall health.  Lack of adequate sleep shows up in facial aging.
  8. Live a Healthy Lifestyle.  Don’t smoke, limit alcohol consumptions, get over the party life and into a daily healthy routine.
  9. Visit my website for info on procedures/products: www.drcovey.com.

This post is an overview of future articles I’ll write educating on the procedures I offer to both men and women.  Look for great info as we go through 2014… helping you to be your very best!
