Really? Botox Doesn’t Turn Your Hair Purple?
The myths about Botox seem endless. The longer I am in practice, the more I hear them. Despite the numbers of people who are treated with Botox for crow’s feet and frown lines around the eyes and brows, misinformation is rampant.
So, herewith…what Botox is and isn’t:
*Botox has been around for a while. In 2002, it became the first FDA-approved product for treating frown lines. In 2013, it because the first and only FDA-approved product for minimizing crow’s feet. It is one of the most widely studied medical aesthetic formulations.
*It is not new and untested.
*Botox is good for both men and women. About one of every ten patients is a man.
*It is not for women only.
*A Botox treatment takes about ten minutes to perform.
*It is not a time-consuming procedure requiring downtime or rest.
*Botox enhances your natural beauty.
*It will not make you appear as if you’ve had drastic cosmetic work done.
To find out how Botox and other cosmetic procedures can restore your natural good looks, call my office to schedule a complimentary consultation.
And thanks to all of you who attended my Fall Beauty Seminar this past weekend. It was great to see you, as always.

Look Aging in the Eyes: Skim Years with a Botox Brow Lift
We look at your face from the inside out. Knowing how to make subtle changes in your outward appearance requires that we understand exactly how your muscles work beneath the surface of your skin. And, the muscles of your face are some of the most complex.
Some facial muscles work against each other—certain ones lift a given feature while other ones push it downward. The outer part of the eyebrow, for instance, is lifted up by forehead muscles and pulled down by squinting muscles. This push-pull, though, presents a clever option. If we want only the muscle that does the lifting to do its job, we can use Botox to relax the muscle that does the pulling. The result is a nonsurgical brow lift, a treatment of a few simple injections that raises and shapes the brow area and also corrects forehead lines, crow’s feet and frown lines.
Often, the lift measures only about 2 millimeters, but the difference is striking. You will look rejuvenated and refreshed immediately, without undergoing traditional brow or forehead surgery.
Call our office for a complimentary consultation tailored just for you.
See you soon.
Eye, Eye, Sir
Sometimes, the same conditions look different on men than they do on women. Some are more pronounced. Some are less so. A man’s eye area is subject to all sorts of stress and can have a huge impact on his overall expression. If you are noticing any of the common concerns described below, keep calm (and please don’t wrinkle your forehead). We can perform simple treatments that will help return a look of youth and vigor–with short office visits and limited or no recovery time.
Droopy Brows and Eyelids: Excessive movement of the muscles surrounding the brow and particularly, issues involving the levator muscle (this elevates the upper lid), can cause your eyebrow to lose its natural arch. Botox, Dysport or Thermage/Thermal Lift can raise the brows to a more youthful position.
Crow’s Feet: These fine lines, which begin at the outer corner of the eyes and fan out, sometimes to the hairline, tend to make eyes appear squinty and aged. They are inevitable, since they are caused by the natural movement of the face, but they don’t have to be permanent. Botox or Dysport injections are the speedy solution for smoothing out lines and wrinkles.
Under-eye Bulging: When fat redistributes from the eye socket to the area underneath the lower eyelid, you will see sacks and bulging. This is a common sign of aging. To reduce the puffiness, we can use Thermage/Thermal Lift and help refresh and revive your appearance.
Sunken Tear Troughs: As you age, you may experience hollowing of the tear troughs on either side of your nose, just below the bridge and lower eyelid. Sometimes, these sunken spaces can extend as far down as the cheek. With hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero, we can fill the troughs and restore the vitality of the eye area.
Dark Circles: When puffiness occurs right under the lower eyelid and is combined with the hollowing of the tear trough, shadows form. These are what we see as dark circles. Even if you don’t feel tired, you will look as if you are. Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane or Belotero can help diminish the darkness, leaving you looking more rested and energetic.
Whatever you see in the mirror, we can certainly help you feel better about it. Whether with hyaluronic acid fillers that plump and add firmness or injectables that smooth fine lines and wrinkles, we can devise a quick and easy plan for you this summer.
See you soon.
Love Your Body with Speedy Summer Fixes
It may not yet be hot enough for the beach, and if you don’t love how you look in a bathing suit, that is good news. But why not love how you look? Why not embrace the season, the suit and your shape?
It’s time to stop hiding. Body sculpting is minimally invasive, safe and quick. With SmartLipo TriPlex laser treatments, we can remove fat from targeted areas of your body. You’ll see a reduction in inches, smoother and tighter skin and a highly defined new shape.
The treatment is done with local anesthesia in our state-of-the-art office, and is particularly effective for abdomens and waistlines–and for both men and women. You’ll see changes in your body that diet and exercise have failed to produce.
We can also reduce the cellulite that ruins any good bathing suit. With the Cellulaze laser, we smooth skin on the thighs buttocks, stomach, upper arms–anywhere where bumps and ripples appear. Despite your rigorous exercise, weight training and high-intensity workouts, cellulite sometimes sticks around. The Cellulaze laser attacks it where it begins, under the skin.
Finally, here’s a run-down of some of our other fast treatments for minimizing lines, wrinkles and folds:
- For crow’s feet and droopy brows: Botox and Dysport
- For tear troughs and hollows below the lower eyelid: Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero
- For sagging and shallow cheeks, temples and jawlines: Voluma XC, Radiesse, Perlane, Restylane and Juvederm
- For nasolabial folds: Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse and Belotero
- For thin and flat lips: Juvederm, Restylane, Restylane Silk and Perlane
Please call our office to schedule a consultation, and see you at the beach.
What Makes Someone Beautiful, Anyway?
The notion of attractiveness seems simple. When we see a person, we know immediately whether we think he or she is beautiful. We don’t really have to decide; our reaction is involuntary, and it is personal. You might think that a particular person is stunning, while your best friend might not.
Interestingly, studies over the years have shown that most people tend to agree, for the most part, on what constitutes a beautiful face, and that the reason they do relies more on brain science than on preference. Consider the ability of babies to recognize faces and prefer the ones that society deems pretty.
So, how we assess appearance might be more complex than simply liking large eyes better than small ones or full lips rather than thin ones. The brain has the capacity to recognize not only attractiveness, but also emotions, personality traits and fertility. The part of the brain that allows us to do this, the fusiform, is also responsible for our ability to recognize familiar faces. When it is damaged, we can’t recall whom we’ve just met, and we can’t distinguish between plain faces and beautiful ones. When we decide that someone is beautiful, we are really thinking that the person is healthy and vital, studies have shown. Smooth skin and symmetrical facial features, for instance, indicate to our brain that a person has good genetics and is not ill, both of which lead us to think that the person is attractive.
However our perception is formed, appearance–of others and ourselves–has a powerful effect on so many of our emotions.

Men’s Skin Is Different
As the title of the famous book, Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, points out – men and women are so different. These differences between men and women even apply to the characteristics of the skin, especially on the face. As an example, just look at a man’s ability to grow facial hair.
These differences mean that men and women have some unique skin needs through the years. Generally there are similarities in that we all lose collagen and need to protect ourselves from sun damage, but the facial skin differences are interesting and contribute to the tailored treatment for restoring a man’s facial health and vitality. In this week’s blog, I’ll cover some interesting characteristics of men’s skin and how to keep it looking younger longer.
- Thickness… A man’s skin is about 25 percent thicker than that of a woman’s. Their androgens, such as testosterone, are the cause of the increased thickness, although skin does gradually thin with age.
- Hydration… Male skin appears to be better hydrated than women’s. Sebum, the oily substance that lubricates skin, is produced in greater amounts in post pubescent males than in females. In addition to more sebum, the level of tissue hydration is possibly caused by excess sweating and production of lactic acid in the sweat. Men’s body temperature is higher and they sweat more than twice as much as women.
- Collagen Density… Men have a higher collagen density than women at all ages. The higher collagen density correlates to the thickness of their skin, and why women appear to age faster than men of the same age. Even though, both men and women lose about 1% of their collagen each year after their 30th birthday, men start off with higher levels so their signs of aging can be delayed.
Taking it for Granted
While men have many advantages with their skin, the majority don’t take care of the assets that they have been given genetically. Despite the higher levels of collagen, thickness, and moisture, men tend to not use sunscreen or skincare to preserve those benefits for longer lasting youthful skin. This is where I can help repair the visible effects of any damage.
Today’s Men Choose Cosmetic Enhancements to Rejuvenate Their Skin
Even though men’s skin seems more resilient, it still weathers with time and can benefit from anti aging treatments to revitalize it. When the marketplace requires mature men to maintain a competitive edge, they can’t afford to look tired and worn down. With strategic cosmetic treatments, men can maintain a rugged look while restoring a healthy, energized, yet relaxed look. Here’s how:
- Dysport or Botox aka “Brotox” – can help smooth out CROW’S FEET and FOREHEAD WRINKLES that could mistakenly communicate a gruff, angry, tired or sour disposition.
- Thermage CPT – can bring up DROOPY BROWS & EYELIDS and may be used to correct UNDER EYE BULGES to restore a lively vitality to the eyes.
- Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm or Radiesse – are perfect for filling in SMILE LINES and ACNE SCARS for a smooth, youthful, and rested appearance.
- Today’s Men…Baby Boomer’s, Gen Xer’s and Millennials…of all ages and stages in life are having “cosmetic enhancements” so they can restore a youthful, healthy appearance and look as great as they feel!
With little or no downtime, these in and out procedures can help men capitalize on the natural differences in their skin to restore a healthy confidence to their look. Visit www.DrCovey.com to learn more.

QUICK SUMMER FIXES and BEACH BODIES NOW!
I’ve written a few blogs on “quick fixes” ranging from Injectable FaceLifts to Cellulite removal employing Cellulaze technology, and Body Contouring using SmartLipo TriPlex laser treatments because they do create fast, visible results.
Here’s a quick overview on lines, wrinkles and folds and how to get rid of them and lift sagging skin.
- Crow’s feet are fine lines that start at the outer corners of the eyes and extend out. They are caused by muscle activity. We correct them with Botox or Dysport (neurotoxins).
- DROOPY BROWS are caused by excessive brow movement and can cause the loss of the natural eyebrow arch. This often causes a heavy appearance. BOTOX or DYSPORT can help lift the eyebrow to its natural position.
- TEAR TROUGHS/HOLLOWSstart below the bridge of the nose and lower eyelid, extending downward toward the cheek.RESTYLANE, JUVEDERM or BELOTERO safely treat these areas.
- CHEEKS, TEMPLES and JAWLINES…As fat diminishes with aging, these areas commonly sag and appear shallow. I use New Voluma XC, Radiesse, Perlane, Restylane or Juvederm Ultra Plus to restore youthfulness.
- NASOLABIAL FOLDSare those lines extending downward from the bottom of the nose to the outer corners of the lips and are caused by fat that has shifted. Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, Radiesse or Belotero easily correct those unwelcome folds!
- LIPS…Over time your lips can become thin, flat and lose their youthful shape and fullness. Great lip plumpers include: Juvederm, Restylane andPerlane.
SOCIAL MEDIA and COSMETIC PROCEDURES…Injectable fillers and Body Sculpting and cellulite removal are three of the top requested anti aging procedures being done today because they work quickly with minimal downtime. Social Media is about being seen and this trend has created a major surge in people of all ages demanding “quick fixes” to look younger and healthier. Injectables and laser treatments can offer that desirable instant youthfulness.
BODY SCULPTING for the BEACH is in high demand because precision fat removal and sculpting is so much quicker and easier than with older technology and techniques. I use the SmartLipo TriPlex system to remove fat instantly and define waistlines and abs with lump free contouring. See the benefits as follows:
- Minimally invasive treatments mean less swelling, less bruising and shorter downtimes
- Enables precise high definition body sculpting around waistlines/abs
- Fat is liquefied and removed resulting in lump free contouring
- TriPlex laser stimulates skin tightening effect
- Multiple, intelligent delivery systems ensure safest, maximum laser strength
- Treatments are done in office using local anesthesia
- Results are better, more effective than with older technology
- Fat removal, tighter skin and amazing high definition body sculpting. See: www.DrCovey.com.
CELLULAZE REMOVES RELENTLESS CELLULITE!
It shows up on the thighs, buttocks, stomach, upper arms and other body areas. Diet, rigorous exercise, weight training and high intensity exercises are great for weight loss, weight control, strength building and muscle tone but they do not eliminate cellulite. Women with dreaded cellulite constantly seek ways to be rid of it. CELLULAZE LASER is the world’s first minimally invasive way of attacking cellulite where it begins…under the skin. See my website for complete info: www.DrCovey.com.
These are three top “quick fixes” you can do today to be ready for all the summer events. Want to look younger, healthier and fabulous? Let’s talk now.

Quick Fixes for Looking Good on Social Media
LOOKING GOOD on SOCIAL MEDIA … It’s a fact that today’s Social Media such as Facebook and Pinterest, Youtube and LinkedIn, for example, are impacting the steady rise in cosmetic procedures. Seeing and being seen defines social media. Recent surveys done by the “Today Show” revealed that of the 7,000 American moms who were polled, 42% suffer from “Pinterest stress, and they worry about not being creative enough when compared to other moms. A survey of 752 plastic surgeons revealed a 315% increase in plastic and cosmetic surgery requests from people wanting to look better on Facebook. Botox was the top choice for those wanting “quick fixes” along with Injectable FaceLifts and Surgical FaceLifts, BrowLifts, Injectable Cheek Augmentation etc. It’s crystal clear that today’s Social Media are making people conscious of their aging and creating a desire to do something about it…to turn back the clock a few years.
CELEBRITIES INFLUENCE a STEADY RISE in surgical and non surgical cosmetic procedures. Body Refinement and always looking good is critical to many of them for personal and career reasons. We learned from the “Celebs” how to defy aging by employing anti aging treatments. The key is to start early (at the first sign of tiny facial lines, etc.) and to always maintain, in order to always look about 10 years younger. A few of today’s celebrities have heavily influenced how people want to look.
EXECUTIVES, MEN and WOMEN’S CAREERS and COSMETIC ANTI AGING PROCEDURES…The very visual world in which we live today affects even our careers. A Manhattan colleague recently told me that he sees a lot of men and women executives and high profile individuals who are in the public eye constantly. Their pictures are taken constantly…and they are expected to look good! YouTube, Facebook, HD Television and public appearances demand they look their absolute best. These “celebs” focus on the face and on Body Sculpting because they get paid to look great! This results in feeling great as well!
CELEBS CHOICES influence us today…We learned a couple decades ago to defy aging as they do.
A few of today’s celebrities have heavily influenced how people want to look.
- Kate Middleton’s nose is the nose of choice among the World’s female population (many wish they also had her face!)
- Cheryl Cole’s dimples…well those are hard to copy
- Robert Pattison’s jaw is the envy of scores of men
- Brit Jude Law has the most requested nose for men
- First Lady Michelle Obama has the most admired arms causing a spike in requests for Upper Arm Lifts
- And many more…
TODAY’S ECONOMY…SCULPTED BODIES and the LIPSTICK EFFECT??? The economy has been less than great the last few years; however, people still come for cosmetic procedures. Analysts call it “a collective vanity” among today’s society…but the Millennials and Gen Xer’s call it good health! They budget for it as part of their regular health regimen. Their top choices include: Injectable FaceLifts, Cheek Augmentations, Botox BrowLifts, Cellulaze Cellulite treatments, SmartLipo TriPlex fat removal and Body Sculpting and much more. The Lipstick effect involves opting for the Injection Effect. These minor treatments defy aging and still allow us to “indulge.”
Been thinking about those unwelcome facial lines, folds, wrinkles, sagging skin, droopy eyelids…or body flab that’s got to go? Let’s talk and design your own personal treatment plan.
Sincerely,
Dr. Covey
Causes of lines, wrinkles and furrows…and How You Can Get Rid of Them…
Lines, wrinkles, furrows, folds and sagging skin all form for various reasons. I’m often asked what causes these unwelcome signs of aging, so I decided to write about it in this blog.
Deep lines or furrows are formed, over the years, by facial muscles in motion. These are called dynamic lines due to the muscle activity, and they occur mainly in the forehead, around the eyes (squint lines or Crow’s Feet) and above the upper lip from repeated lip pursing. Botox and Dysport are the top choices for temporarily correcting dynamic lines. These injectables work by inhibiting muscle activity to slow down line formation, smooth out existing lines and wrinkles and prevent future ones from being formed.
Static lines are those lines that are unchanged by muscle motion. They just stay the way they were formed. Eventually, dynamic lines become static also thus making them permanent. Injectable fillers, such as Radiesse, Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero are great choices for eliminating static lines. Fillers plump up the treated areas and restore youthful contours for up to 2 years with our newer, advanced formulas and injection techniques.
Sags and Bags are different than lines and wrinkles even though they all occur with aging. Ptosis (sagging) is primarily linked to the aging process. As we age, there is a gradual reduction of subcutaneous fat cells. This is another form of volume loss that causes the skin to stretch and sag (ptosis) due to skin laxity. This process is clearly seen in the lower part of the aging face such as the jowls or nasolabial folds or saggy upper eyelids and under eye bags from too much fat. If minor preventive treatments are started early enough (20’s-30’s) much of this can be delayed, slowed down or prevented without surgery. Today’s injectable fillers are often called “miracle workers” for good reason.
It’s never too late to get started! Exilis Elite can tighten lax skin, melt stubborn fat, resculpt your face (and body) and restore youthful contours. Popular areas we treat include: face, jowls, neck, chest, back, love handles, bra fat, abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, knees and more.
Beach Time can be eye opening…many of my patients are coming in for cellulite treatments with our Cellulaze Laser. It is the first and only one that attacks cellulite where it starts…under the skin. This office treatment offers immediate, satisfying results.
My patients love Cellulazetm Laser treatments because they get results! Visit my website www.DrCovey.com for more info on Cellulaze and other age defying treatments I offer.
At East End Laser Care, each patient helps design his or her own personalized treatment plan. This assures you get the results you desire and deserve. Let’s talk soon.

Dr. Covey
Youthful Eyes Again with Injectables
My last blog reviewed Liquid FaceLifts using injectables such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, Juvederm Voluma (for amazing cheek lifts) and, of course, Botox/Dysport for smoothing out lines and wrinkles…especially around the eyes and in the forehead. This blog will focus on the eyes because they are such a complex part of the face, and age related changes around the eyes can be dramatic.
THE PATH of AGING EYES starts with lines and wrinkles and progresses over the years. Loose skin, volume loss and even changes in shape occur over time. The eyes are housed in an orbit. This is a little house with two sidewalls, a floor and a ceiling. As we age, the eyes sink back and down and the house gets bigger, thus a changing shape becomes visible. This is due to bone and soft tissue transformations (architectural).
HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS:
- Droopy brows and eyelids
- Hooded Eyelids
- Crow’s Feet
- Under Eye bags (puffy)
- Under Eye Hollows and Shadowing
- Aged, sad facial appearance
- Eye shape may change (from almond to round)
Injectables are very effective for improving the appearance of both wrinkles and depressions around the eyes. It’s even possible to diminish dark circles and under eye hollows with a series of injections that smooth the contour from the lower lid down to the cheek. The best options include hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm or Restylane to replace lost volume, and Botox to smooth out lines and wrinkles and prevent future ones. Thermage/Thermal Lift may be used to correct “puffiness” under the eyes and to tighten loose upper eyelids.
Perlane can effectively remove under eye shadows with injections in the tear troughs. This volume replacement eliminates that worn-out look accentuated by puffy tear troughs.
Good skin elasticity is important, so starting at a younger age, with minor treatments and always maintaining them, allows people to delay or even avoid surgery altogether while looking years younger
Hollow eyes are caused by loss of soft tissue volume, in the orbit, and bone density. This combination makes the eye appear “sunken.” This can develop as early as the teenage years. Hollow eyes make you look “aged” as the eyes appear bony, recessed, sunken and gaunt.
Crow’s Feet…get rid of them! Caused by muscles in motion, these worry lines, frown lines, smile lines are all called dynamic wrinkles, caused from years of living and using facial muscles to show expression. Botox and Dysport can safely and effectively erase them and prevent future recurrences. Skin Resurfacing, like the Fraxel Laser, is also a top treatment, done in combo with Botox/Dysport, to get rid of unhealthy skin, lines and wrinkles, and leave you with fresh, glowing skin.
You’ve probably heard the saying: “The eyes have it.” Well, if your eyes don’t have a young, healthy appearance we can change that. Let’s talk soon about your own tailored treatment plan…for your eyes.
Sincerely,
Dr. Covey
